Updated Feb 27th 2011: This information courtesy of 8a.nu, according to which Kalymnos is currently the most popular climbing crag in the world! In addition to Ryanair’s year-round flights from Frankfurt and Milan to Kos, in mid-April the airline will start flying to Kos from six more European destinations: Bari, Bologna, Brussels, Kaunas, Liverpool and Oslo.
Details about Ryanair’s winter flights to Kos (original post dated Dec 13th): Granted, winter climbing in Kalymnos is not at the top of most climbers’ list: it’s not exactly easy to get to, even during high season, not to mention that hopping from one flight or ferry to the other can cost an arm and a leg (and most climbers can’t spare those.) But here’s the good news: Ryanair’s flight from Frankfurt-Hahn to Kos operates throughout the year, with one-way fares in January as low as €3 (!) and its flight from Milan-Bergamo to Kos starts operating March 1st. Winter climbers rejoice!
The details:
Frankfurt (Hahn) – Kos
Flights from Frankfurt (Hahn) to Kos take 4 hrs 20 min. They operate twice a week (Mondays / Fridays or Thursdays / Sundays, depending on the month). Predictably, prices increase as the weather gets warmer, and the sooner you book the better. Nevertheless, even after Easter –a traditionally busy season to visit— roundtrip fares hardly cost more than €150. By comparison the domestic flight from Athens to Kalymnos (45 min) costs a non-negotiable €160!
So even in you don’t live near Frankfurt, it may be worth flying there to catch the next flight to Kos. To check the connections between Frankfurt-Hahn and other European cities, click here.
Milan (Bergamo) – Kos
Starting March 1st 2011, Ryanair also operates the Milan (Bergamo) – Kos flight (4 hrs). We didn’t find any €3 fares, but at €25-40 euros the prices are still a steal. For flights to Milan-Bergamo from other European cities, check Ryanair’s Milan page here.
As for easyJet, it begins operating its flight from London (Gatwick) to Kos on March 30th, the lowest one-way fare being around €70. To check easyJet’s flight connections click on this helpful interactive route map.
Note that the fares quoted include taxes but do not include ‘optional charges such as administration and checked baggage fees’.
Also, if you decide to come to Kalymnos via Kos, add an additional €15-25 per person for the journey over to Kalymnos. For more details on getting from Kos to Kalymnos, see our step-by-step guide.
Safe travels!

Liverpool > KOS….. BOOKED! April 2011 – One way – less than 100 Euros – includes everything. I’ll be there in April :-) RYANAIR are offering one-way IN AUGUST for less than 90 Euros – includes luggage, taxes ect ect ect. Only to End October. And I take around 12 flights a year, mostly Ryanair, Jet2 or Air Berlin. Ryanair Never a problem. You get what you pay for – a seat from Liverpool to KOS.

The price doesn’t include luggage and food, but with 10 euros to go and 10 euros to come back … ;-)
Hello and happy holidays everyone!
@ Pascal: We neither support nor oppose budget airlines- however, it’s good to know your options. Ryanair’s Frankfurt-Kos flight is the first and only flight at the moment connecting Kos to Europe in the winter. That said, each climber can make his/her own decision based on budget, luggage, date flexibility etc.
@ Henrique & Slow Guide: may we add that in November we paid 79 euro each way for the Athens-Kalymnos flight. As Slow Guide has already mentioned, the airport is not far from the climbing areas, but note that there is no bus to the airport – so you can either take a taxi to the ‘climbing side’ or, if you have booked your accommodation in advance, you can ask the landlord whether a pickup service is available.
Prices for 1 way Athens to Kalymnos are around 65Euro, booked in advance. But bad weather CAN cause cancellations – Kalymnois airport is tiny.
From the Airport to the climbing start – around 5km. Most of the climbing starts just after Masouri – everyone rents a bike. Enjoy :-)
hey, nice to know, but what about the flying directly to kalymnos airport from Athens? Is it a good/cheap option? I’m mean, I can compare the prices on olympicair.com , but is it easy to get from the airport to the climb side of the island?
Cheers!
The price doesn’t include luggage, food and some other things.
I experienced those “low cost” prices on others destinations and finally, if you have to travel on hollydays or week ends, the other companies offer almost the same price.
And friends of mine, and me twice, experienced those companies (Easy Jet and Ryan Air) and I can say YOU CAN’T TRUST THEM TO GAIN YOUR DESTINATION AT THE DATE YOU BOOKED!
And oàf course, they dont rzespect the social rules in the countries where they work, their workers are badly paid and work in the worst conditions…
For saving about ten euros, will you support their bandit-directors?
