ROPE THICKNESS AND 80 METER ROPES
I have been talking with friends about rope thickness. In particular, thickness as it applies to an 80 meter rope. With such a long rope weight and bulk become a factor and a burden. How thin can one safely go with any length rope? Is 9.2mm safe enough for sport climbing where routes are not generally worked? An 80 meter rope would not be your only rope for every climbing destination. It would be used for Kalymnos and other destinations with 40 meter routes. I have an 80 m x 9.2mm Petzl that has been used for two one month visits to Kalymnos plus a three week trip to Nafplio and Santorini. The rope is light and compact and has held up well. It has minimal stretch for such a thin rope. It doesn’t appear especially thin but people regard it with skepticism. What are people using these days? I am small and light. Thank you for your input.
