Danger on Telendos; Three Caves; Barbarossa; To Kapsouli !!!

During climbing the routes in the Barbarossa Cave I noticed that a lot off the bolts where loose and the nut off the left bolt off the belay off “Barbarossa” was almost completely off! I turned them all back on with a wrench whitch I always carry with me.

A bigger danger is there in the route “To Kapsouli”, the third bolt is missing!

I cleaned the route on my way down and I pulled on the third quickdraw to take it out.

The bolt broke off and was completely rust-eaten!

I can send you a picture off it if you want!?

There are probable more bad bolts in this route whitch was bolted only 4 years ago and it might be dangerous to climb this route without a check-up!?

Hi Jerry, thanks for the info. Yes please, send me a picture of the bolt. I assume it was not a stainless steel bolt. I am in Kalymnos and I will check this sector ASAP. Maybe see you?

Hi Aris,

I have send you four pictures of the broken bolt by e-mail. I am not longer on Kalymnos but I hope to come back in oktobre, if I can find a Ryanair-flyght.

Hi Jerry,

I went to Three Caves yesterday. I checked the route “To Kapsouli” and replaced the third bolt. I also checked the first four bolts of this route (I removed the fourth bolt to check it inside) and it seemed to only have some surface rust. Otherwise it looked OK and it did not break off easily. So I assume the third bolt was not stainless.

Thank you for tightening the loose bolts on Barbarossa.
