hi!

we’re trying to make it to kalymnos as cheap as possible is it still possible to get a ferry straight from athens to kalymnos in mid-october and back to athens a month later ?

from the ferrysites, you can only book a couple of weeks in advance it seems.

Hi Jan,

Yes, it will definitely be possible to take a ferry from Athens to Kalymnos and back. Ferries operate year-round. Keep in mind, though, that they are not daily; usually there are 3 per week. So as long as they fit with you arrival / departure dates, this can be a cost-effective option. I’m afraid there’s no way to book far ahead of time, even if you go straight to the ferry company. The schedules for each month never become available until a few weeks before. Why, I don’t know.

we’re pretty flexible, but would ofcourse prefer not to wait 3 days in athens do you know if there’s a regular schedule during the year, like if they kinda always go on mon, wed and fridays fx, even if you can’t book it yet?

Hi Jan,

Well…right now the ferries are on Tue – Thu – Sun. But who knows what they will be in October! That’s a different season and schedules may or may not change. There are no guarantees.

I’m sorry, I wish there was a better answer.

Here’s a couple more options, assuming you get to Athens and have to wait 2-3 days:

1. See if there’s a ferry to Kos. We’ve done this once when we accidentally went to the port a day early There’s a ‘Blue Star’ ferry to Kos almost every day departing from the same gate. When you get to Kos Town you can either a) take the next Catamaran to Kalymnos IF you arrive at Kos in the morning [the catamaran connects Kos Town to Kalymnos once a day late morning], or b) go to Mastichari port by taxi or bus and take the next ferry to Kalymnos [local ferries connect Mastichari port to Kalymnos several times throughout the day]. Neither option is as cheap as ferrying directly to Kalymnos, but it’s probably still cheaper than airfare.

2. If you end up stuck in Athens and don’t feel like going to the acropolis, email us and we’ll tell you where you can climb. Believe it or not there are quite a few crags on excellent rock all around the city.

Flights to Kos on Aegean are 36 or 46 euros each way. Hardly worth taking the ferry if you’re coming in October. It seems they stop at the end of October, but that could also be that they just don’t post the November schedule yet.

Good point. Flights to Kos continue year-round, so it’s probably that the schedule hasn’t been announced yet.

I asked Aegean about this and they responded that “there will be no scheduled services from Athens to Kos, Greece (and return) operated by Aegean in the future”. They said that their flights continue until Oct 26th 2013, and referred me to the competition, Olympic Air, for flights after this…

The flights between Athens and Kos are actually more expensive than what I posted earlier, as this did not include airport taxes.. It seems that whether on Aegean (until October) or on Olympic, one-way between Athens and Kos costs about 75 to 85 euros.
