Recently, someone has been painting the grade of each route at the bottom of the crag (at Ghost Kitchen, at Secret Garden, at Odyssey and others). Not only has this undermined the care and attention given by the equippers but also it is poor practice. It is poor practice for several reasons: firstly, all the grades are all available on-line at this site; secondly, the grades often change with loss of holds etc so why paint something on the rock that may well become incorrect; and thirdly, well, additional and unnecessary writing on the rock is little more than graffiti.
It is one thing to neatly paint the name of the route at the base of each route as this doesn’t change with time and it does aid route identification on a sometimes featureless crag. But this additional writing on the rock is very unwelcome. So, whoever you are, please stop it. It’s just bad practice.
