    Hi all,

    Great website! Super informative.

I would love to check out the climbing in Kalymnos, but the only time I can make it there is late July….. Would it be possible to do any climbing in the shade at that time? Will there be people there to climb with?

    Thanks a lot!

    Dave

    Hi Dave,

Yes, it’s perfectly possible just a case of starting early, plenty of sectors are in shade in the morning. I’ve climbed in July and August.

    Jim.

    Hey Dave!

While late July is not optimal, you can still get a lot of climbing done in the shade. Most sectors are in the shade until early afternoon, so you’ll need to get an early start (unless you visit sectors with shade later in the day; there are a few). Not sure how readily you’ll find a partner, though. Summer climbers come in smaller numbers (most are Greek and Italian), so in that respect you’d be better off visiting in September / October (that’s the good thing about crowds :)

    Hi Dave,

We’ve climbed in Kaly for the last two summer. Last year, the meltemi blew from the north most of the time so the temperature never really got much above 30 degrees. And to be honest, with rock as rough as Kaly, this temperature isn’t so bad… as long as you are in the shade. It’s not like trying to climb on British limestone at this temperature (oh horror!). You might find some of the more slabby routes with slopers or small crimps tough going eg Paris Texas or Moonbridge but the more usual steep-but-juggy fare is fine; for example, Marci Marc saw lots of ascents in August. Those accustomed to the temperature (ie Greeks and Italians) were putting in the time on routes up to 8b.

As far picking up a partner, you’ll be able to put a note up on the notice board at one of the two climbing shops though, as noted above, most of the summer climbers are from the Mediterranean countries.

    Hello Dave,

I have July off too – and am planning on a visit to the Island for some climbing (even though it will be a little warm!). So far I am 85% committed to this time window for travel – in which case I would be interested in a belay buddy! I climb 5.10/5.11 (which is 6’s, 7a’s on the Europe climbing scale) and stoked to tackle some crazy overhanging routes!

Feel free to shoot me an email if you decide to visit and climb in July!
