    Hello Aris,

I would like to have some information about the multi-pitch routes in the sector School : is it possible to rappel down with a 2x50m? Are the bolts OK?

About “Wings of Life”, in Telendos : is rappelling down possible?

Is there any other 5c max multi-pitch routes in Kalymnos?

    Thanks

    Thomas

    1. Multi-pitches at School: Yes, you can rappel down with 2x50m ropes by 5 x 25m abseils. There are rings at every belay station.

    2. Wings for Life: no, rappel is strongly discouraged.

    3. No

    Cheers,

    Aris

OK, we have to see with my girlfriend if we also take the 2x50m and the helmets, or just the single rope… ;)

We plan to climb some multi-pitch routes on Telendos late in September 2012. I will bring my 80 m single rope (9.8 mm) to Kalymnos anyway. But should I bring my two 60 m half ropes (8.4 mm) in addition, for the multi-pitch routes? I see on p 331 of the guidebook (2011) that they are using two (half) ropes on Wings for Life.

    1) Are bolts on “Wings for Life” and othe multi-pitch routes put so that it is convenient to clip two half ropes left and right alternatively?

    2) Would there be a lot of rope drag on Wings for Life with a single rope, that can be avoided with two half ropes?

    3) Are all belay stations on the multi-pitch routes in the guide book equipped with rings, that can be used for rappelling, if necessary?

    3) Would not a 80 m single rope suffice for rapelling, when pitch lengths are “only” up to 35 m?

    Thanks

    Tijuca

    Hi Tijuca,

    1. Wings for Life” and all the other multi-pitch routes in Kalymnos are fully bolted and almost all parties climb here with single ropes. So you dont need two half ropes.

    2. No, there is not rope drag problem with a single rope. Some long QD are useful though.

    3. Almost all the belay stations equipped with rings (except some routes at Ocean Dream) but rappeling is not always possible, because some routes have big traverses or climb diagonal above big caves or the rope easily stuck at big rock formations. Check out the guidebook for each one route.

    4. Yes, but tie always knots at the end of the rope and consult the guidebook if rappel is possible.

    cheers,

    Aris
