    Hi,

Last week a friend of mine saw a snake in the Jurassic park sector.

She described it as being 40cm long almost white on one side and dark on the other. It could lift up its head from the ground about 10cm.

Then I had a look in the topo, found a lot of info I do not need but nothing about the snakes on the Island.

Does someone know what kind of snake can be found there ?

I also want to ask about the huge bees/wasps we can see there. Same situation = nothing in the topo. Are they dangerous ?

    Cheers

    Nick

    Hi Nick,

It’s hard to find any reliable information on the fauna of Kalymnos – there isn’t much on the internet and we don’t know of any local resource we can draw upon. That said, the snake could be a Kalymnos melanistic whip snake (an endemic sub-species found on Kalymnos), a European cat snake, a dwarf snake or a rock viper. This information comes from various sources on the internet and we can’t vouch for its reliability. The same goes for the wasps / hornets. Here are some links in English (though both pertain to nearby islands, not Kalymnos):

    http://australianherpetology.com/kos%20reptiles.htm

We make every effort to include useful information in the guidebook based on what climbers have asked — sorry to hear you found it irrelevant. We’ll look into adding some reliable flora / fauna information in a future edition.

    Hi

found these at the back of Sea Breeze. I think they are the Melanistic Dahl’s whip snakes, the ones only found on Kalymnos.Link to photo

One to not sit on is the Ottoman Viper which is big (a metre or more) and quite fat. We saw one at St Photis, in a very quiet area. They are venomous but fortunately don’t like humans and usually slither away before you see them! Although they look slow, apparently they can strike quite quickly. Just give them plenty of space and they’re fine. Respect the wildlife; they’re part of the beauty of Kalymnos.
