Little Eden is a new, dreamy crag on the east coast of Kalymnos, near Rina/Vathy. It is a short photogenic cliff that sits just above a quiet beach north of the Vathy fjord. Locally, the beach is known as Kampí.
Little Eden is ideal for climbing on hot days. The cliff comes into the shade just before 12 o’clock noon. The green-blue waters shimmering below are reason enough to visit, even if climbing is not on the day’s itinerary.
Climbing: 50 meters from the beach, the cliff is orange, white, and grey limestone of very good quality and a height of up to 20-25 meters. The rock is strongly featured with pockets, some natural vertical cracks, and relatively sharp holds. It can be compared to sector The Beach in that the rock is sharp and mostly vertical.
Routes: There are 25 routes to-date, graded primarily between 6a-7b. The hardest routes (8a–8b?) are short with very tough boulder passages. More traffic will benefit the crag by clearing away little sharp bits. There is potential for many new routes, especially easier ones, up to 6a, but thorough cleaning of vegetation and loose rock is a prerequisite.
Equippers: Little Eden was equipped in summer 2019 by the Austrian climber Hannes Webhofer, with the help of the Kalymnian climber Panormitis Platsis and the Swiss climber Niels Abegglen. The Kalymnos Kayak Centre (KKC), a local business renting kayaks and boats, contributed transfers to and from the crag. (Routes #23 and #24 were equipped by Luca Salsotto and Jürgen Rohrmann.)
Bolts: The hardware used to equip Little Eden (bolts, hangers, and clippable lower-offs) was provided by us here at Climb Kalymnos. This is made possible thanks to proceeds from the Kalymnos guidebook. We are grateful to all the climbers who continue to support our efforts.
Conditions: Perfect for afternoon climbing when the temperature is high and the heat too intense at other parts of the island. Avoid days with strong winds, especially out of the south and east.
Shade: After 11:30-12:00. Exposure: NE
Approach: Little Eden is very easy to approach with a boat from Vathy. Go to the small port of Rina/Vathy and ask at the pier or the tavernas for somebody with a boat to take you to Kampí beach. Ask for the price, and don’t forget to also arrange for your return. Alternatively, if it’s not very windy and the water outside Vathy fjord is very calm, you can rent a kayak from KKC at the far end of the pier. (Small engine-powered boats are also for rent.) By boat, you will need 5-10 minutes to the beach. By kayak, 15-20 minutes. When you get to the beach, head to the left side, behind the trees. A narrow uphill path to the cliffs starts there. Walking time: 3 minutes.
We think Little Eden is a very worthwhile addition to Kalymnos climbing, and its popularity is guaranteed. We are particularly happy that it will benefit Vathy, an outstandingly beautiful part of Kalymnos that has not exactly been on the top of climbers’ lists. We hope this new crag will give the local economy of Vathy a much-needed boost.
As always, don’t forget to bring plenty of water and food with you, and thank you for leaving no trace when you leave the crag. This is not limited to only picking up your (and maybe other people’s) trash and knowing how to properly poop outdoors, but extends to your general attitude and crag etiquette.
Lastly, as you have come to expect, we leave you with a list of routes for sector Little Eden in a handy PDF. Download, print, climb, and send us your feedback.

So,
at last we’ve enjoyed Little edén, It has been fantastic, not just for the crag, but also for the site.
The boat is not cheap, however, when we decided to finish climbing we called by phone and arrived in 10 minutes.
It has been our fourth visit to Kalymnos.
Thanks once again for the equipping and maintenance of the crag.
Anton
Taxi boat at the kayak rental, 10 € one way, the boat can take – people, even you are only two it’s cheap! The walk back to Vathy is very nice in the evening light…
Hello,
planing tp come to Kalymnos Mid October, any news concerning going by boad to Kampi?
We went to Vathy on a Friday 2 weeks ago with the idea to go to Little Eden and it was almost as described in the blog post. When we got to the port at around 11am, the people working in one of the tavernas greeted us and asked us whether we were looking to go to the DWS cave. We responded that we wanted to go to the Kampi beach and they said, that they could take us for “free”. We thought “sweet, free ride!”. Once we agreed to go with them, they said that they could take us and pick us up for free but that we had to have dinner with them on our way back. We thought “yeah ok, it’s a fair deal” and agreed again. The boat captain (who we believe was also the owner of the taverna) had some commitments at 4:30 pm so the people working at the taverna said (because the captain didn’t speak English) that the boat will pick us up at 4pm. We thought ”ok, 5 hrs of climbing, that’s not too bad” and there we went. We went to board the boat and started the journey. Unfortunately, long story short before the DWS cave, the boat broke down and slowly made our way back to the port.
There were no other boats in the port closer to the tavernas that could take us to kampi and the people working there told us to ask further down. Eventually, we got to the Kalymnos kayak centre (waternative) and asked there if they could take us to kampi. They said yes, they had a motor boat and the round trip was 20 EUR. Definitely not bad considering all the time lost by then, the fact that the dinner at the taverna would have cost us probably a bit more and the addition that we had no time limit. The girl that took us to kampi gave us her phone number and told us to call her when we wanted to be picked up.
We had the beach and the hole sector for ourselves for a few hours until two other parties arrived towards 3pm. One party arrived by foot (because they were told at the taverna that the boat had broken down!) and they mentioned that the walk was between 40 to 50 min. We ended up staying until 5:30pm.
The place is fabulous, we swam and sunbathe for a bit before climbing. There are really nice routes and we thought the rock is definitely sharper in the routes on the left (e.g. Spider Hotel) than in the ones on the right (e.g. Stone Romance). It’s definitely worth the adventure. Thanks a lot to the route and crag developers for providing us with such a gem.
Walking time between 50 and 60 minutes – if you don’t run. If you are fast and know the way 35-40 minutes.
I confirm: 40 minutes for everybody. And last week we asked a fisherman, and he took us on his boat for 10 euros one way.
The realistic walking time is around 60 minutes.
Hi Anton. Yes it is possible, and most of climbers will do it due to the price of boat rides and kayak rentals!
From Vathy tavers on port, go to the church by the stairs and left of it, take the path with red dots. Walk uphill, pass a gate and follow the fence on the ascending and traversing path. After 20 minutes it goes downhill, 5 minutes later you will see the grag down right. Follow the path and the fence until you reach the ravine, turn right and follow this small canyon to the beach. About 35mn walk from Vathy.
After the end of the crisis, you will enjoy!
Hello,
more crags, fantastic. Is it possible to reach the crag on foot??
Anton
For the moment not.
Looks like a nice addition. Is there fixed prices for boats or persons?
