Wintering in Kalymnos

Chris Craggs climbing at sector Julian on Christmas Day, 2009

The award-winning guidebook author Chris Craggs and his wife Sherri Davy spent most of this past autumn and winter on Kalymnos (18 weeks!). They climbed and walked around the island almost every day. We were lucky to meet and spend some time with them in December, and we certainly enjoyed the insight and advice Chris so gallantly shared with us. As we speak, Chris and Sherri are on their way to their next stop on the map, but as far as returning to Kalymnos they assure us that “‘the flight is already booked!”

Here are some thoughts on wintering in Kalymnos from Chris’s blog:

-It has been a lot warmer and a bit more unsettled than we were expecting; 99 sunny days, 13 cloudy days and 9 wet days pretty much tells all though.

-The place has been MUCH quieter than we expected, since late November it has been pretty much deserted.
Stopping in Myrties was a good call, much sunnier than Masouri, and with a supermarket just across the road for getting the daily basics – spot on!

-The locals are a wonderful bunch and have done a great job keeping us supplied with cakes and weather forecasts.
