Suggestions to improve Kalymnos climbing

As climbing on Kalymnos continues to grow, so does the need to protect and improve it. We recently shared some thoughts about Kalymnos on 8a.nu. Among other things we discuss our hopes and suggestions for the future, from the imminent (more maintenance of routes, the need for a rescue team etc) to the less pressing needs (climbers’ info point, maintenance of footpaths). Q&A with Greek climber Thanassis Sotiropoulos

Also known as the cover model on the 2010 Kalymnos guidebook, Greek climber Thanassis Sotiropoulos is one of the top in the country. He comes from Patras, a city on the northern coast of the Peloponnese peninsula in mainland Greece, where some of the hardest climbs in Greece are to be found. Q&A with Australian climber Lee Cujes

We are happy to share this post today with Lee Cujes, a great climber and coach from Australia who calls himself a resident of Kalymnos (on his Facebook page, anyway!). And it’s true that he knows Kalymnos well, so we’ve asked him to share some of his thoughts and insights. Climbing since the mid-90s, Lee has a strong background in traditional climbing, later moving into establishing new routes, writing guidebooks & pursuing sport climbing. After traveling much of the world climbing, Lee developed a structured training program for climbers in 2007 & started coaching a select group of climbers. Attention climbers! Bad bolts & routes to avoid

*Updated Jan 8th* To all climbers: please read this entire post for a list of routes with potentially bad bolts. A batch of defective bolts sold between June 2010 – January 2011 by manufacturer Rockland has been recalled, but unfortunately at the time of the recall several of these bolts had already been used to equip new routes on Kalymnos. Please note that the routes with potentially defective bolts are recent, so they are not in the guidebook. When we found out about the bad bolts we contacted all equippers (that we know of) who bolted routes in the past year to try and locate those with Rockland bolts, but we haven’t been …read more »
