New Kalymnos Guidebook Coming at the End of September

2015_Kalymnos_Guidebook_Cover

[UPDATE: The new guidebook is now available at many points of sale in Masouri, Kalymnos.] The all-new Kalymnos guidebook is on its way to the printers at last! After months and months of work it has all come together in a book that we are very proud of. The guidebook includes nearly 2700 routes, and it also goes digital, including its very own free app for iOS and Android with each copy. More features of the new topo are listed below. The guidebook is expected to be published the last week of September; we will update here and make pre-ordering available in a few days. Until then, a big thank you to all the friends and climbers who supported us during the last few very intense months with their emails, photos, and information. And to all of you still waiting for an answer to your emails, we are sorry we haven’t been more prompt but we promise to get back into the swing of things soon!

The new Kalymnos guidebook in a nutshell:

The 2015 edition of the Kalymnos guidebook is an all-new print edition of the guidebook + a free application for iOS and android devices. It is written by Aris Theodoropoulos, the author of five previous editions of the Kalymnos guidebook, who has been involved with the development of climbing on Kalymnos since it first started, in 1999.

The new Kalymnos guidebook is a 448-page English language guidebook. It features approximately 2700 routes. The majority of photos and photo-topos are new, and in addition to the practical information about each crag (shade, exposure, approach etc) little extras, like GPS coordinates to each crag, have been added.

With this edition, the Kalymnos guidebook also goes digital. We have partnered with Vertical Life to make a Kalymnos guidebook app for iOS and Android devices. The app will be free with each copy of the print guidebook (there is a scratch-code included in each copy allowing you to download the app at the App Store or Google Play). The app will also be available as a separate purchase at a later date; details will follow in a few weeks.

We leave you with a preview of a chapter from the new guidebook: Saint Photis, a crag where many new routes have been added since the last edition of the guidebook was published. Enjoy!

    Hi Alan,

this must be an incomplete download of the topos because the app contains exactly same information as the book. Could you check if there is an update available and perform a logout/login once from the app.

If this did not help you, please write us at support.app@vertical-life.info.

    Happy climbing!
    Iiro

Thank you very much Sascha, your support it is much appreciated!
“Snow White” and some other minor crags as ‘Milianos’ and “saint George” did not make it in to the guidebook because we think that they dont meet the Kalymnos quality standards. However we will publish these crags in the app of the guidebook, later this year.

    Have fun in Kaly,
    Cheers,

    Aris

The new guidebook is really a very nice piece of work and truly a big job well done. Anyway, I’m wondering why the sector “Snow White” (even it might not be one of the major crags there) is not included anymore. Is there any reason for that?

I’m every time I read in it really happy to see the wonderful photo topos of sectors where I recently was still dealing with printed route lists. Also the new organization of the sectors and subsectors was well done.

Cheers and looking forward to use on the island next time in spring ’16,

    Sascha

Looks great as usual and I can’t wait to read it.
Just one comment about the addition of GPS coordinates: how can you lose
    yourself on Kalymnos?!

    Hi Aris,

Any chance of preordering the guide and getting the iOS app before the print guide? Arriving on the 17th and would love to use the new guide this week.

    Thanks

@ Pulsar: In response to your question about the price, it will be EUR 40 on the island, or EUR 40 + shipping for online orders.

Thank you all, your support it is much appreciated!

Pulsar: Actually we have problems with the glue of the cover at the 2012/13 reprint. So after this we changed printing company (for 2014 and 2015).

Yves: Yes, the new topo will be available at the shops at Masouri, probably from the last week of Sep.

    Great work!
Any chance to find the new edition on the island at the end of September?

  • Pulsar says:

Great work! I just hope that the cover will be more durable – in the 2010 edition it became unfixed after a few days – the glue didn’t stick.
    What about the price?

This is a tremendous piece of work! On behalf of all the climbers from around the world who come to Kalymnos, I say thank you for preparing such quality guides over the last 16 years.
